We might never know the answer to the question “What would a mega-budget zombie blockbuster directed by David Fincher look like?” But thanks to this trailer for Love, Death & Robots, we now know the answer to the question “What would an animated series produced by The Finch look like?” Netflix has revealed the first trailer for the upcoming anthology series presented by David Fincher and Deadpool director Tim Miller. Their collaboration has resulted in a series that looks absolutely bonkers and totally visceral, with each of the 18 “short, sweet, and lethal” episodes covering the title topics love, death, and robots.
Fincher and Miller enlisted directors from around the world to create short (five to 15-minute long) episodes, showcasing an assortment of animation styles ranging from the more traditional to highly-detailed CGI and what appears to be mo-cap. The series is diverse in style as well as genre; some episodes are comedic, while others are horrific in nature. Longtime fans of Fincher may not be surprised at the look and feel of Love, Death & Robots, as the acclaimed filmmaker was at one time attempting to develop an animated film based The Goon comic books with Miller attached to direct. Thankfully, the pair found another animated project on which to collaborate and, as you can see in the trailer, this one is most definitely not for kids.
“Love, Death & Robots is my dream project, it combines my love of animation and amazing stories,” said Miller in an official statement. “Midnight movies, comics, books, and magazines of fantastic fiction have inspired me for decades, but they were relegated to the fringe culture of geeks and nerds of which I was a part. I’m so f—ing excited that the creative landscape has finally changed enough for adult-themed animation to become part of a larger cultural conversation.”
