David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike find love in A United Kingdom trailer
In the first trailer for Amma Asante’s A United Kingdom, David Oyelowo and Rosamund play real life figures Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams, who fall in love and get married much to the displeasure of everyone around them. He’s the prince of a Bechuanaland, a protectorate in Africa; she’s a salesman’s daughter. Outrage abounds: He’s chided upon his arrival home, and a representative from the British Empire tells Williams she’ll be its “downfall” in the region. But Khama fiercely defends their coupling in a rousing, emotional speech: “I am ready to serve you because I love my people, I love this land, but I love my wife.” (If you want to know what happens, Khama goes on to become the first president of Botswana.)
Oyelowo also assumes producer duties for this one, which marks Asante’s follow-up to 2014’s Belle. A United Kingdom does not have a U.S. release date yet, but will hit theaters in, appropriately, the U.K. November 25. It will also make a stop at the Toronto International Film Festival.
