David Oyelowo stands alone in the trailer for HBO’s Nightingale

HBO has dropped the trailer for its latest feature film, the psychological thriller Nightingale. Because this is HBO, audiences can expect high production values, stellar acting, and an impressive cast. But the most impressive thing about this cast is that it consists of only one actor.

Of course, it helps that that actor is David Oyelowo, last seen as Martin Luther King Jr. in 2014’s Selma. In Nightingale, Oyelowo plays Peter, a war veteran who recently returned home from combat; according to the description on the film’s Facebook page, Peter is “yearning to rekindle [his] relationship [with] a friend who he served with.” Peter is obviously not the most stable individual around, giving Oyelowo a chance to show that he’s a great actor, whether the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes him or not. The trailer is cut to Animotion’s 1984 hit “Obsession,” giving it a kind of gallows humor that counteracts the more serious overtones of the piece.

Nightingale premieres May 29th on HBO, and you’ll be able to watch it using your friend’s HBO Go password any time after that.
