David Simon wants Treme to end after four seasons

Viewers tracking the real-life events that provide the basis for HBO’s Treme have long assumed that David Simon’s series would wrap after five seasons, passing through the redemptive arc of the New Orleans Saints’ Super Bowl victory in 2009, then winding up right back in the thick of natural disaster with the BP oil spill. But if that’s the case, the show will need to do some cramming to get it all in: Simon told the Times-Picayune while filming the next batch of episodes—which will pick up in 2008—that he plans to wrap up the show after four seasons, and has already pitched those intentions to HBO. Of course, it’s obviously up to HBO whether Treme will even get a fourth season, considering a third-year renewal for the modestly rated show was something of a surprise. But if he does, at least fans can take solace in knowing that Simon has a definite endgame in mind, and so he won’t have to spin his wheels on unnecessary subplots like, say, following Sonny around while he courts a Vietnamese girl.
