DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow adds a Muslim-American superhero
The Waverider is about to get its newest inhabitant. Variety reports the CW show DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow is adding a new series regular to its cast: Tala Ashe is joining the roster as Zari Adrianna Tomaz, the latest member of the time-traveling group. The character has existed in the comics for some time, as Tomaz first appeared in 2006 in the comic 52 as a new iteration of the superhero Isis. However, the series seems to have wisely decided to tweak that particular backstory. Here’s how the revamped character is described:
Zari Adrianna Tomaz is a Muslim-American woman from the year 2030 who lives in a world of contradictions — technology has brought about incredible change in her future, but too bad human nature hasn’t kept pace. Fear, prejudice and a lack of care for the planet have forced Zari to become a “grey hat hacktivist.” Described as a computer nerd with a wry, combative attitude, she is a woman living a double life who doesn’t realize that she has secret, latent powers derived from an ancient, mystical source.
If her mystical powers are anything like her comic-book self, Tomaz will be super-strong, have the ability to heal any wound, and—most notably—have control over nature. (Not always voluntary: The power is tied to her emotions, it rains when she cries, etc.) She’s also inhumanly fast, smart, telekinetic, can fire force blasts and create energy shields. Pretty godlike powers, basically. Presumably, the show won’t have her immediately be perfect at all of these talents, even though a group of people who literally broke time could use all the help they can get.
This actually won’t the first time Adrianna Tomaz has been portrayed on a live-action TV series. The character appeared in the 10th season of Smallville, though it really wasn’t all that great an episode. No word on how she’ll join up with our heroes on Legends, but we‘re not opposed to some sort of nerd-off with Ray.
