DC to launch its own streaming platform with Young Justice and new Titans show
Outside of Gotham and the CW, Warner Bros. has had a difficult time getting DC Comics-based superhero shows off the ground. So, in order to free itself from the shackles of traditional TV. with its overly demanding advertisers and frustratingly fickle viewers, Warner Bros. has decided to cut out the middle man and just make its own streaming service that’s totally dedicated to DC. This comes from Deadline, and though the service doesn’t have a proper name yet, it is coming out of the gate with a couple of big shows: Season three of Young Justice and a live-action Teen Titans drama called Titans.
Young Justice was a Cartoon Network series that had a big cult following due to its mature storytelling and intriguing take on DC’s superhero sidekicks, but the show was canceled back in 2013. In November, Warner Bros. revealed that it was working on a new season, but at the time it was suspiciously cagey about where that new season was going to end up. Now we know that the revival will be called Young Justice: Outsiders, and it will debut on this streaming service at some point next year.
The other show, Titans, was originally being developed at TNT, but the network finally scrapped it early last year. The show comes from a Justice League-style team-up of people whose names you probably recognize from nerdy stuff, including Star Trek: Discovery director Akiva Goldsman, DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns, and CW superhero mogul Greg Berlanti. The show will focus on former Robin Dick Grayson as he puts together a superhero team that includes orange alien girl Starfire and mopey demon girl Raven.
The streaming platform doesn’t have a concrete release date—or, again, a name—but it’s supposed to launch at some point in 2018. Also, this news comes a little over a month after Warner Bros. announced another streaming service specifically devoted to classic cartoons, so the company is clearly on board with this whole “internet” thing.
