We have recently come to terms with the fact that there’s a chance Deadpool could actually be an Oscar contender. After all, it received nominations from both the Producers and Writers Guilds, and Tim Miller even got a nod from his union for being a first-time director. Well, Ryan Reynolds has decided to take this possibility at least half-seriously. He posted a “for your consideration” video to Twitter. Predictably, it’s a jokey take on the genre with mentions of chimichangas and assless chaps.
But as the promo winds down it actually seems to get—gasp!—sincere, referring to the perseverance it took to get the film off the ground and the dedicated fans. And, you know, what? That strategy might be crazy enough to work. The little-movie-that-could narrative is one that has gotten under the Academy’s proverbial skin in the past, and Deadpool, in some ways, has that going for it despite being linked to a successful superhero franchise.
