Deerhunter is releasing “a science fiction album about the present” in January

Deerhunter, the venerable “ambient punk” outfit led by Bradford Cox, will return on January 18 with Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, a collection of songs they’re calling “a science fiction album about the present.”

A press release describes the band as “reinventing their approach to microphones, the drum kit, the harpsichord, the electromechanical and synthetic sounds of keyboards,” adding that “whatever guitars are left are pure chrome, plugged straight into the mixing desk with no amplifier or vintage warmth.” Neat!

Harpsichord and piano form the spine of lead single (and album opener) “Death In Midsummer,” which arrives with a striking video tracking Cox and the rest of the band across sunny deserts, swamps, and highways, the shots oscillating between the present and the grainy nostalgia of home video. “Walk around and you’ll see how it fades,” Cox sings as the song comes to a melancholic close.

Watch it below.

Deerhunter will also embark on a world tour in support of the record. See their full itinerary below.
