Definitely panic over the new X-Men: Apocalypse Super Bowl spot

The Super Bowl TV spot for Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse expands the director’s action ambitions from the floating football stadium of X-Men: Days Of Future Past to the complete decimation of entire cities. Buildings disassemble, cars flap around like kites in a storm, and, oh great, someone launched the nukes as well.

The action shots are interspersed with close-ups of Michael Fassbender’s Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, both appropriately horrified at the extinction-level event happening around them. Only Olivia Munn’s Psylocke looks comfortable in the Chernobyl-inspired playground, cutting a car in half while flipping toward the camera as if to say, “Who’s your favorite X-Man now?”

A cover of Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic” gives the TV spot an ominous tone that it probably would have achieved anyway with all the end-of-the-world stuff, thus marking the second unnecessary use of Coldplay on TV last night.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27.
