Denis Villeneuve may take on a challenge many directors before him have faced: He might try and adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Villeneuve is in talks to tackle the project for Legendary Entertainment, which recently bought the film and television rights to the novel. David Lynch famously directed the 1984 movie starring Kyle MacLachlan, and there was also a 2000 miniseries featuring William Hurt. However, pop culture history is littered with the versions of Dune that never came to fruition. There’s even an entire documentary about Alejandro Jodorowsky’s failed try. As recently as 2011 Paramount was planning a reboot, enlisting the likes of Peter Berg—who decided to do Battleship instead—and later Pierre Morel. Villeneuve is hot off the critically acclaimed Arrival, and is also behind the Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049, due out last year. The trailer for that follow-up was released earlier this week.
