Designer creates minimalist movie posters using only circles
While not quite as abstract as those paper-only movie posters, graphic designer Nick Barclay earns major minimalist points for his movie poster redesigns that use nothing but circles. “I came up the idea while sitting through Interstellar and hating it,” Barclay explains, “It got me thinking about how in 2001: Space Odyssey a circle could be a main character in a film. So I wanted to see how many popular movies I could break down into circles and still be recognizable.”
Barclay managed to create designs for 14 films, some of which have an obvious circular connection (the ring from The Lord Of The Rings) while others are more subtle (the blue and red pills from The Matrix). For his part, Barclay’s favorite design is the one for The Deer Hunter. And of the designs as a whole, Barclay notes, “I like to think that people will look at them and see the humor but still get the movie or have that ‘ahhhh’ moment when they work out what each poster represents.”
Some of our favorite posters are below while the full set is available for viewing on My Modern Met and prints can be purchased on Barclay’s site. Also, we’ll beat you to the punch and just say that, yes, a lot of these posters look like boobs at first glance.
