Despicable Me 3 trailer pays homage to the ’80s

Sometimes, it is difficult to remember a life before minions, let alone the fact that before they were their own film franchise and meme empire, they existed merely as secondary characters in the Despicable Me movies. But Despicable Me 3 is on the horizon, and there are zero minions to be found in the trailer. JUST KIDDING. Of course there are minions. But the incessant yellow blobs don’t make their entrance until the final seconds of the trailer, when they show up to DJ a beach party. The only creature more annoying than a minion is a DJ, so someone had a sick sense of humor by merging the two monsters.

But before the minions arrive, the trailer reveals that there’s a new villain in town. The Anti-Villain League Headquarters is monitoring a man in the midst of a diamond heist, when someone astutely observes: “That’s not a monster! That’s a man wearing shoulder pads!” Apparently, there’s “only one villain whose fashion sense is quite that dainty: Balthazar Bratt.” With his fashion choices, mullet, sick dance moves, and Rubik’s Cube weapon, Balthazar Bratt seems to be a villain who loves the 1980s a little too much. Gru is having absolutely none of it.

Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, and Russell Brand all return. South Park’s Trey Parker will voice Balthazar Bratt. Despicable Me 3 is set to open in June 2017.
