After years of hopes and mini-reunions, a revival of Roseanne was finally confirmed by ABC earlier this spring. The series will return to the alphabet network some time in 2018, with all of the core cast: Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman, Lecy Goranson, and Sarah Chalke, though the latter won’t be playing a Becky. Amid all of the excitement, though, there have been plenty of questions, like “Well, who is Sarah Chalke going to play then?” and “Isn’t Dan dead, though?”
Such matters don’t trouble Barr, who hasn’t released any info on her vision for the revival. What she will say is that it will have absolutely nothing to do with current president Donald Trump. That denial might seem out of the blue, until you consider the fact that the artificial cheese puff in the Oval Office has leached into every corner of media. But, more pertinently, ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey recently hinted at a Roseanne take on Trump: “I don’t know whether Roseanne will speak about Trump by name. But she’s going to speak very honestly.” She also said that the renewed show will “[tackle] some of the topics that are in conversation today,“ which will presumably not be the nonexistent feud between superhero movie studios.
But as Vulture reports, Barr says the new Roseanne episodes will focus on the Conner family, not the first family.
Despite the comedian and one-time presidential hopeful’s all-caps rebuttal, she does have a history of aligning herself with Trump’s policies, mostly in a bid to dump on Hillary Clinton. But for now, it doesn’t seem like Lanford, Illinois will be a fictional stop on Trump’s 2020 campaign (the real version of which is already underway).
