Bringing Greg Rucka back to Wonder Woman was one of the most exciting announcements of DC Rebirth, and it got even better when DC revealed that Rucka’s Black Magick collaborator Nicola Scott would be joining him as one of the artists on the title. In a wise move to deal with the book’s new double-shipping schedule, Scott is drawing the even-numbered issues of Wonder Woman while Liam Sharp draws the odd issues, and each artist is handling a different story with a different tone. Rucka and Scott are working together on “Year One,” which will sort out the heroine’s various origins and give her a single definitive history in DC Rebirth, and this preview of this week’s Wonder Woman #2 kicks off the story by highlighting the splendor of Paradise Island and focusing on Diana’s relationship to her home, friends, and family.
While some readers may have grown tired of Wonder Woman origin stories (this year has also had Wonder Woman: Earth One and The Legend Of Wonder Woman), DC has done great work picking creative teams that offer a variety of approaches to the narrative. Rucka and Scott both have a deep familiarity with the character, and Scott’s work has evolved significantly since she worked with Gail Simone on the title, making for especially lush, expressive visuals. Romulo Fajardo Jr.’s delicate coloring blends beautifully with Scott’s linework, adding dimension without covering her clean, detailed inking. The art looks outstanding, and with Rucka in the writer’s seat, there’s a good chance that Diana’s streamlined origin will be just as engaging.
