Diana Rigg is not mincing words in this Game Of Thrones deleted scene
If there’s one thing Game Of Thrones has learned over the years, it’s that there’s no end to the pleasures of Diana Riggs’ Lady Olenna Tyrell shooting icy barbs at the mere mortals around her. So it’s a little surprising that the show left any Olenna material on the cutting room floor this season. But Entertainment Weekly has released an exclusive deleted scene to help promote the upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release of the show’s sixth season. And it showcases Olenna in all her “don’t give a fuck” glory.
The scene was originally part of the second episode, “Home.” A lot of stuff happened in that episode, including the last-minute return of a certain snowy protagonist. And since the deleted scene just offers a quick check-in on the Tyrell family, it makes sense that it was cut. But it’s nice to revisit a time when King’s Landing was a little bit less of a mess than it wound up being in the season finale.
In the scene, Olenna rides through King’s Landing with her son Mace Tyrell (Roger Ashton-Griffiths), who has recently returned to Westeros from the Iron Bank. She gives him shit for not seeing through Cersei’s schemes, puts him in his place for his frivolity, and hatches a plan to free her grandchildren. She also gets to deliver the surprisingly steely line, “Look me in the eye and tell me there was no singing.”
