Did Sicario really need a sequel?
Though it wasn’t a monster hit, 2015’s Sicario has more than earned its reputation as one of the sharpest thrillers in recent years. But did its pointedly dark conclusion really need a follow-up? Hollywood is filled with unnecessary spin-offs and sequels that explore corners of cinematic universes that were probably better off left alone, but few of these films feel as needless or as ill-timed as Stefano Sollima’s Sicario: Day Of The Soldado. Written by Taylor Sheridan, who also wrote the original, Day Of The Soldado lacks the tension and moral ambiguity that made the original such a compelling film. On this episode of Film Club, A.A. Dowd and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky discuss the sequel and whether or not it’s worth your time.
