Diego Luna joins Star Wars: Rogue One
Small-screen womanizer Diego Luna has joined the cast of Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars: Rogue One, the first movie in the Star Wars: Anthology spinoff series. The film, whose large ensemble cast already includes Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, and Ben Mendelsohn, is said to have more in common with The Dirty Dozen than Flash Gordon and will follow a team of rebel spies as they plan and execute a heist of the Death Star plans. (There’s no word on whether Luna has been cast as a Bothan, but to be fair it was never implied that that particular alien race stole the plans for the original Death Star—that was actually Death Star II in Return Of The Jedi.) The film is set between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope, so hopefully audiences will be treated to the lived-in universe of the originals.
Luna is no stranger to genre acting, having appeared in Vampires: Los Muertos and Elysium, but he’s probably still best known in the U.S. for one of his early breakout roles, 2001’s Y Tu Mamá También. Of course, like all actors, he always really wanted to direct, and in recent years has directed several films in his native Mexico, like the 2014 biopic Cesar Chavez.
Star Wars: Rogue One is slated for a December 16, 2016 release.
