Diego Luna to play iconic womanizer Casanova for Amazon
With Mad Men’s Don Draper leaving the airwaves in six short weeks, the search for a new TV ladies’ man has begun. Enter Diego Luna as Casanova, the womanizer so good his name has become synonymous with the act of love.
Deadline reports that Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet has found his lead in Diego Luna for a new Amazon series recounting the adventures of Giacomo Casanova. The Italian adventurer and author became so famous for his many affairs that his name has been adopted by smooth operators—like Greg Brady, the Casanova of Clinton Avenue—for generations. Luna, previously seen in Elysium and Y Tu Mama Tambien, will be joined by fellow cast members Bojana Novakovic, Miranda Richardson, Ben Daniels, and Amelia Clarkson.
The series is said to focus on the little-known period in Casanova’s life when he served as a spy for the Parisian government—and bedded plenty of women, as spies are known to do. The script comes from Stu Zicherman of The Americans, who is also serving as executive producer. The untitled Amazon/Electus co-production is currently filming in Europe, and the finished pilot will be available on Amazon later this year.
