Diplo made a remix to Billy Ray Cyrus' remix of Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road"
When we last left the ongoing saga of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” Billy Ray Cyrus had added a verse to the track in an attempt to shore up the song’s country music bonafides. Previously, the original version had made an appearance on Billboard’s Hot Country chart, only to be removed by Billboard after being deemed insufficiently country, despite featuring banjo samples and lyrics about horses and roads and taking said horses to those roads. Adding a white dude shockingly didn’t get Lil Nas X back on Billboard’s country charts, but the original song and then its new version rocketed to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and has stayed there since. And now, as all big hits eventually must, the song has an electronic remix, courtesy of Diplo. You can check it out above.
Diplo, who for whatever reason was performing at the Coachella-but-country festival Stagecoach last weekend, brought out Cyrus and Lil Nas X during his set to debut his version of the song. While one might expect Diplo to double down on the original’s trap beats, he instead forgoes the drop for some whistling and a lighter breakbeat sound. Whether or not this works for you, it’s surely just the tip of the “Old Town Road” remix remix iceberg. Soon enough, every man, woman, and child will have a version of “Old Town Road” to call their own.
