Disney announces Star Wars: Episode VIII release date, spinoff movie title

Time to get out your calendars and make sure no one’s getting married, having a baby, or some other difficult-to-avoid life event on May 26, 2017, as that’s when Variety reports that Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters. Disney chief Bob Iger announced the release date at a shareholders’ meeting in San Francisco today, where he also confirmed previous reports that Looper’s Rian Johnson will write and direct the eighth film in the series.

At that same meeting, Iger also announced that Gareth Edwards’ Felicity Jones-starring standalone Star Wars movie will begin filming this summer. The title of the movie will be Rogue One, as in the callsign given to the commander of the Rebel Alliance group Rogue Squadron.
