Disney is making a live-action Snow White, since we haven’t had one in a while
Back in 2012, two movies based on the classic Snow White fairy tale were released: Rupert Sanders’ Snow White And The Huntsman and Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror. Surprisingly, though, neither of them were produced by Disney, which has spent the last few years mining its old animated hits for live-action gold—most recently by announcing that Guy Ritchie will direct an Aladdin movie. Seeing as how Disney missed out on that last wave of Snow White movies, it has now decided to correct that error by announcing a live-action Snow White movie of its very own.
As reported by Variety, this new version will “expand upon the story and music” from the original animated film, with screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl On The Train) writing the script and La La Land’s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul writing new songs. Weirdly, it’s unclear if this movie will have any connection to Rose Red, the Snow White spin-off/re-telling that Disney announced back in March, but it would be weird for them to be totally unrelated.
That movie was supposed to be a sort of side story that focused on Snow White’s previously unmentioned sister, but perhaps now the two films will work together to establish some kind of Snow White cinematic universe. Or maybe Rose Red will just get canned, since it’s not nearly as marketable as a straight-up live-action remake of the iconic cartoon.
