Disney is pulling its movies from Netflix and launching a new streaming service

Last May, Disney announced that it was making Netflix the exclusive home for movies from Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, and—of course—Disney itself, meaning that even premium cable networks wouldn’t be getting stuff like Star Wars sequels, Avengers movies, or the latest live-action remake of an old Disney cartoon. To date, this deal has given Netflix big-name stuff like Moana, Captain America: Civil War, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Netflix subscribers shouldn’t get too used to this steady supply of good stuff.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has already decided to end its Netflix deal in favor of something that it can make more money off of—namely a new, all-Disney streaming service. To do that, Disney will be buying a majority stake in BAMTech, a streaming technology built by Major League Baseball’s MLBAM. The new service will launch in 2019, and Disney CEO Bob Iger referring to it as a “strategic shift in the way we distribute our content.”

Iger also wasn’t very forthcoming with details about this, and while it seems obvious that Disney and Pixar movies will be exclusive to this new thing, it’s unclear if Marvel and Star Wars movies will be as well. Still, the news was enough to make Netflix’s stock immediately dip a few points, so Disney basically stuck it to its former partner without really knowing what it was doing.
