Disney Plus decides against rebooting Power Rangers

On second thought, it's not morphin' time.

Disney Plus decides against rebooting Power Rangers

Well over a year after it was first reported that Disney+ was planning to reboot Power Rangers for a live-action series, the streamer has ultimately decided against it. This is per Deadline, which reports that the series, intended to come from Percy Jackson And The Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, would not move past the development stage. The outlet cites budget issues as the primary reason the series will not be moving forward. The investment needed to get Power Rangers off the ground apparently doesn’t make economic sense given that it’s Hasbro, not Disney, that actually owns the IP.

Hasbro has been trying to get a reboot of this franchise off the ground for a while. The last Power Rangers series was Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, which came to Netflix in 2023 and was part of the same continuity as the initial Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers series from 1993. Hasbro had planned to reboot the franchise with Netflix, but those plans fell through in 2024. It took about nine months for the switch to Disney+ to happen, so perhaps we can expect the Rangers to find another home in about another nine. If there’s one thing these Rangers can do, it’s morph.
