District 9 screenwriter Terri Tatchell to adapt novel Apocalypse Now Now

As reported by Variety, Oscar-nominated District 9 screenwriter Terri Tatchell has signed on to write an adaptation of Apocalypse Now Now, the South Africa-set fantasy novel from Charlie Human. The book (which is probably pretty hard to Google) is about “the kingpin of a smut-peddling high school” whose girlfriend gets kidnapped by some mysterious force. The smut kingpin then hires a “supernatural bounty hunter” to get her back, which then leads them into the “increasingly bizarre landscape of Cape Town’s underworld.” Also, an apocalypse is somehow involved. It sounds a bit like an edgier version of what Ready Player One would be like if its author were obsessed with magic, monsters, and apocalypses instead of ‘80s movies and video games. Tatchell says that, “South Africa has always pushed through the usual limits” of her imagination, but Apocalypse Now Now’s author Charlie Human has “actually upped the game and obliterated them all altogether.” That’s pretty high praise from the woman who wrote District 9, so let’s all be polite and ignore the fact that she also wrote Chappie.
