Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan will be a main player in the Jumanji sequel game

Earlier this month, we learned that the upcoming Jumanji movie would be a sequel, not a reboot, as previously believed. The finer details aren’t all that important. All that matters is that Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson are reuniting to hopefully bring a bit of humor to this horrifying world of board games gone very wrong.

Joining Hart, Johnson, Nick Jonas, and Jack Black in this wild game, Karen Gillan has been added to the Jumanji sequel in a “major role.” Gillan—of Selfie and Doctor Who fame—will play Martha, a role that the Jumanji overlords have been trying to fill for the past few months. With the main cast finally in place, the movie is heading into principal photography next month in Honolulu.

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner (who both know a thing or two about innocent things gone wrong, having co-created the baffling series Zoo) penned the most recent version of the Jumanji sequel script, which is based on an original draft from Chris McKenna (Community and The Mindy Project) and Erik Sommers (Marry Me and Happy Endings). New Girl executive producer Jake Kasdan is set to direct.

Now would be a good time to point out that even when this project was being referred to as a “reboot,” certain internet factions weren’t exactly crying about ruined childhoods in the same way they were about the Ghostbusters reboot. It’s almost like women in Hollywood are disproportionately scrutinized. Who knew?

The movie, which will provide a whole new generation with game-themed nightmares, is set to release on July 28, 2017.
