Doctor Who's David Tennant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse join Fright Night remake

The upcoming remake of ’80s Dracula-in-the-‘burbs film Fright Night continues to exist, with Doctor Who’s David Tennant and Superbad/Kick-Ass star Christopher Mintz-Plasse recently announced as joining the cast. Tennant will take on the Peter Vincent role played by Roddy McDowall in the original—although in keeping with the update’s relocated plot, he won’t be playing a former actor fallen into the ignoble role of late-night horror-show host, but rather a Las Vegas magician whose act includes lots of horror-film imagery, and who’s been described as a “Criss Angel-type” with plenty of “bad-boy attitude” in Marti Noxon’s script. (This, unfortunately, officially puts to rest those rumors that the film may have had original star Chris Sarandon taking on the Peter Vincent role by playing himself—as a formerly famous actor who once starred in Fright Night.) Wheezing wunderkind Christopher Mintz-Plasse has been cast as Evil Ed, a former friend of Anton Yelchin’s Charlie character who falls under the thrall of Colin Farrell’s charismatic vampire and, as his eternal reward, gets the film’s most memorable line. With the casting of Toni Collette as Yelchin’s mother, that just leaves the role of his girlfriend “Amy” (played by Married With Children’s Amanda Bearse in the original), but we’re probably not going to report on that unless it’s someone really unusual.
