Documentary Now! tries Sondheim on for size
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, February 27. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Documentary Now! (IFC, 11 p.m.): It doesn’t take much to get us to love Documentary Now! It is, after all, our top pick for Wednesday for the second week in a row. But this one? This is special. Just watch this shit.
That’s Documentary Now! sending up one of the greatest American composers by having a world-class actor sing a song that’s written to be impossible to sing. And that’s just one of them. Paula Pell plays Elaine Stritch. Two contemporary musical theater stars do a parody of “Getting Married Today” about how much cocaine they did at a party. It’s great. The music is legitimately excellent, the episode honors (and skewers) a cult-favorite documentary by D.A. Pennebaker, and again, Paula Pell does Elaine Stritch. Don’t miss it. And tip your doorman.
Regular coverage
Riverdale (The CW, 8 p.m.)
Modern Family (ABC, 9 p.m.)
You’re The Worst (FXX, 10 p.m.)
Deadly Class (Syfy, 10 p.m.)
Wild card
The Masked Singer (Fox, 8 p.m., two-hour season finale): Our guesses: The bee is Gladys Knight. The monster is… T-Pain? And the peacock for sure is Donny Osmond.
Here’s hoping that, behind the masks, we’ll find a new panel of judges for season two.
