Does six seasons and a gag reel count for Community?

From a financial standpoint, the sixth season of Community may have been a Greendale-esque boondoggle that brought down Yahoo Screen from within. And, sure, several members of the original cast, including Chevy Chase, Donald Glover, and Yvette Nicole Brown, had departed by the time these web-exclusive episodes were made. Still in all, these 13 entertaining episodes proved that the show’s inventive spirit was still intact and helped Community fulfill at least half of its oft-repeated “six seasons and a movie” mantra. That movie may never arrive, but now, as the provocatively titled set Community: The Complete Final? Season hits stores on March 8, Entertainment Weekly offers a sneak peek at a gag reel that’s being included as an extra.

On the surface, there is not much to distinguish this from any standard blooper collection. Props malfunction and/or fall over. (Remember those tablet computers on scooters? Yeah, those were a nightmare.) Actors break character and start laughing during takes. It’s that kind of thing. What gives this added poignancy is the fact that the Yahoo Screen episodes may represent the end of the line for the eternally embattled, Dan Harmon-created comedy. Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, and Jim Rash may and probably will work with each other on different film, TV, and internet projects down the line, but it might never again be on a project as cultishly loved and idiosyncratic as Community. Maybe the performers will look back at this blooper reel someday the way people idly thumb through old high school yearbooks. The actors certainly seem to be having a hell of a time making these shows. Brie, in particular, can barely keep a straight face.
