Don’t expect any punching in the Sandman movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt says
Fans of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series have been patiently awaiting the film adaptation for quite a while now, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently spoke to MTV with an update about the project. True, the various ins and outs of trying to make the epic story into one mainstream action blockbuster is enough to transform anyone into Delirium, but JGL sounded excited about the project. His big admission, if it can count as one, is that it’s incredibly difficult to make a massive action spectacular when you can’t rely on the usual action-movie fallbacks, like, say, the hero punching bad guys.
Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing shit up. This has nothing to do with that. And it was actually one of the things that Neil Gaiman said to me, he said ‘Don’t have any punching.’ Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn’t punch anybody. That’s not what he does. It’s going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary cliches. So, that’s why it’s taking a lot time to write, but it’s going to be really good.
So get fired up, because here comes the pulse-pounding, heart-racing thriller that will feature none of the elements that usually cause any of those symptoms. Presumably, Gordon-Levitt simply meant that punching is so passé: today’s action heroes engage in martial arts, and Sandman will be so busy roundhouse-kicking dudes that he’ll forget all about the whole “punching” option. The actor also talks about his new film The Walk and season two of his show HitRecord, though there’s probably a bunch of punching in both of those, so whatever.
