Donald Glover and Rihanna's new movie to stream for free this weekend on Amazon and Twitch
Earlier this week, we wrote about the initial streaming plans for Donald Glover’s new movie Guava Island, which the Childish Gambino alter-ego intends to debut at Coachella this weekend via YouTube. Now, Amazon Studios—which picked up Glover’s film, which co-stars Rihanna, and was directed by Hiro Murai, a few months ago—is giving the movie an even stronger promotional push, announcing that it’ll be streaming for free for everybody throughout this upcoming weekend on Amazon Prime. (And on Twitch, to boot, in case you prefer your corporate conglomerate streaming options to have a more hip, youthful aesthetic.)
The studio also gave us our first tease of what the film—shot in Cuba over the course of four very fast weeks—actually looks like. Watching the teaser, it’s still pretty hard to tease out what Guava Island is actually about, though. Certainly, Glover and Rihanna are both present, as is an island itself. No guavas are in evidence. At one point, we see a bird.
Still, Murai and Glover have produced some pretty fantastic work in recent years—including some of the most memorable episodes of Atlanta, and the fascinating video for “This Is America”—so it’s pretty hard to write them off at this point, extant guavas or no. You can check out the film, starting at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time on Saturday, for free via a special landing site Amazon built for the event.
