Donald Glover reveals Billy Dee Williams' advice about being Lando on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
On the same day of his series Atlanta’s season finale and the Hollywood premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Donald Glover was Lando-cool on Jimmy Kimmel Live! All the more impressive since Glover’s also coming off a fine hosting turn at Saturday Night Live, has the most buzzed-about song and music video in the world, and, oh yeah, just got to sing “Superstition” onstage with Stevie Wonder at Stevie’s birthday party. (Glover also casually dropped that he was there hanging with Angela Bassett, for god’s sake.) Still, Glover couldn’t help but betray some of the childlike glee still obviously percolating through his system at getting to play the young Lando Calrissian, the character memorably played by the coolest man in any galaxy, Billy Dee Williams, and whose action figure Glover revealed was his first-ever toy.
Telling Kimmel about taking his Star Wars-loving dad on a tour of the massive island set built for the film, Glover described how proud he was to have gone after and gotten the role—even if his agent’s first response was an unenthusiastic, “I don’t like your odds.” (Never tell any pilot of the Millennium Falcon the odds.) Glover also revealed how much geek-heavy research he did into the future leader of the cloud city of Bespin before getting to meet with Williams prior to shooting. And, if Glover’s inner Star Wars nerd was disappointed by Williams’ advice of “I don’t know, just be charming, man,” he wasn’t showing it. Playing it, again, Lando-cool, Glover noted that he took Williams’ advice to heart, even if “Don’t overthink it” is a mantra Williams Lando seemed to have forgotten by the time The Empire Strikes Back rolled around. (That’s how Vader gets you.) At any rate, Glover also played it cool when he slipped a surprise invitation to the premiere to Kimmel’s entire audience with an offhand, “Anybody want to go?” Smooth.
