While acknowledging that there will be a few comic-book movie releases per year for the foreseeable future, Justice League Dark helmer Doug Liman is trying to distinguish his upcoming offshoot from the superpowered masses. And it seems that instead of worrying about crossovers and bombastic action, the Edge Of Tomorrow director wants to turn the focus inward, starting with fleshing out John Constantine. In a chat with CinemaBlend, Liman describes his approach to the tentpole film as “really personal and small,” which he notes is a marked departure from the current fare:
I think people will be surprised how character driven and how intimate Justice League Dark is—in kind of a field of bloated comic book movies. We’ve found a way to do something that’s actually really personal and small, and that’s my goal. [My new movie] The Wall is about character. The scenario allows me to dive into what I think is… I just love people! I love putting people in crazy situations. For John Constantine, we have an amazing set-up for him for Justice League Dark that’s really human.
So that’s good news for Constantine fans, and anyone eager for more character development (that goes beyond your mothers sharing what’s a common first name) in their superhero movies. But Liman’s not the only one touting his project as a more personal offering; Matt Nix, who’s teamed up with Bryan Singer on Fox’s X-Men series, has also stated that his team is looking to tell an “intimate story.”
