Drake is Spotify’s most-streamed artist of the year
It’s now December, so we should be bracing ourselves for the deluge of year-end lists along with winter. Spotify has already deployed most of its arsenal, sharing its most-streamed songs and artists, with former Canadian TV teen and current rap superstar Drake nabbing the top spot. The “6 God” rapper racked up 1.8 billion streams in 2015, with over 210,000,000 plays on “Hotline Bling” alone. Drake edged out last year’s winner, Ed Sheeran, who came in second in 2015, followed by The Weeknd, Maroon 5, and Kanye West.
Drake’s second and third most-streamed songs were “Jumpman” and the Meek Mill-diss track “Back To Back,” neither of which came off his latest album. But he didn’t have the most-streamed song—that honor went to Major Lazer for “Lean On,” which had already been dubbed Spotify’s “Song Of The Summer”. Drake collaborator The Weeknd had the most-streamed album of the year with Beauty Behind The Madness, and because Spotify’s list follows the awards-body convention of separating the women from the men, Rihanna was named the most-streamed female artist with one billion streams.
