DreamWorks and Universal are leaving their prehistorical family, The Croods, in the past. The companies have decided to put the kibosh on a sequel to the 2013 animated film, Variety reports. This is bad news for Croods fans, and even worse news for the 30 people that were working on the follow-up. NBCUniversal purchased DreamWorks earlier this year, and obviously did not see the Neanderthals voiced by Emma Stone and Nicolas Cage as lucrative characters. Not while they have Minions around. Still, a source told Variety that the studio is keeping the dream of more Croods alive, saying that the property “is still very much in the DreamWorks catalog. It’s not unheard of that it might be something someone takes a look at in the future.”
When The Croods opened, The A.V. Club gave it a B-, writing that it “takes the low road at every opportunity, giving lip service to enlightenment while following a Flintstonian instinct to keep punching the clock at the quarry.”
