Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant to go on the Santa Clarita Diet for Netflix

Deadline reports that Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant are getting ready to play suburban malcontents on the upcoming Netflix comedy Santa Clarita Diet. The series from Victor Fresco, a veteran TV producer who’s worked on Go On, Better Off Ted, and Andy Richter Controls The Universe. Fresco will serve as showrunner, with Barrymore and Olyphant set to executive produce in addition to starring in the series.

Barrymore and Olyphant will play married realtors Sheila and Joel, who lead “vaguely discontented lives” in Santa Clarita, a real-life Los Angeles suburb. That ambiguous description doesn’t tell us much about the cause of the couple’s unhappiness, let alone detail what exactly comprises a Santa Clarita diet: Is it a steady intake of overpriced tacos? Or is it just a reference to all the meals they skip because they’re stuck in traffic? Whatever the regimen is, a “dramatic change” in Sheila’s life will jostle them right out of their rut and set them on “a road of death and destruction…but in a good way.” Could this be the menopause comedy we’ve all been waiting for? We’ll find out next year, when the show debuts.
