Drew Barrymore’s Santa Clarita Diet is people

Netflix has finally revealed the secret of Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant’s The Santa Clarita Diet: human flesh. For months now, the streaming service has hinted that the new comedy series would kick off with Barrymore’s character, realtor Sheila Hammond, undergoing a “dramatic change.” Apparently, though, said transition isn’t between careers or into parenthood, but into the life of a flesh-craving undead cannibal. It’s not clear what heralds Sheila’s transformation into some kind of suburban zombie, but apparently it’s good for your figure: “If you ate nothing but protein every day, you’d really thin out!” Barrymore joked to USA Today, mimicking the show’s marketing campaign, which is full of fake diet ads for the titular “nutrition system.”

Santa Clarita Diet is the latest comedy from Victor Fresco, creator of Andy Richter Controls The Universe and A.V. Club favorite Better Off Ted. That’s a strong pedigree for high-concept comedy, even as it competes for mental space with shows like iZombie, People Of Earth, and CBS’s recently canceled BrainDead. The series premieres on February 3.
