Drew Goddard appeases online gods with ritual Cabin In The Woods sequel talk
Appeasing the ancient—in internet time, anyway—primeval forces that ensure a bountiful harvest of pageviews each news cycle, The Cabin In The Woods director Drew Goddard recently performed the ritual tease of a potential sequel to the internet’s favorite horror movie of the new millennium. In a recent interview with Den Of Geek’s Ryan Lamble, Goddard claimed that Lionsgate had approached him about a potential second Cabin movie, saying, “the studio wants to do it. They’ve come to us … The funny part is, I don’t think we planned that movie to do a sequel, you know?”
Anyone who’s seen the film knows that that’s a bit of an understatement, although The A.V. Club would happily watch a side adventure detailing how exactly Kiko’s spirit got inside that happy frog. Goddard understands these concerns, and says basically that the rules of horror don’t apply to The Cabin In The Woods and he could find a way to write a sequel, if he and Joss Whedon felt like it: “I know Joss and I both feel like we don’t want to tarnish what we did with the first one … There’s nothing in the hopper right now, but who knows? The way Joss and I work, we might wake up tomorrow and go, ‘let’s go do that,’ or whatever.”
So there you go. Vague statement leads to fan excitement leads to leads to online buzz, and the circle of internet life begins anew. But who knows? Stranger things have happened.
