Most of us probably grew tired of hearing Psy’s “Gangnam Style” back in 2012, when the song was a culture-saturating Billboard Hot 100 hit. The mashup-minded Bandcamp user Triple Q, however, is working overtime to ensure the tune remains relevant. Not only is he the one responsible for 2013’s Psybrid Theory, which expertly combined Psy and Linkin Park, but last week, he also unleashed a monstrous, 743-track collection of “Gangnam Style” remixes, mashups, and reinterpretations. (This is itself a sequel to 2014’s GANGNAMCORE, which contained over 100 reimagined versions of the song.)
This year’s model is divided into two parts—GANGNAMCORE 2, Part I: NO STOPPING! and GANGNAMCORE 2, Part II: ONLY OPPING!—and features a mind-boggling array of combinations, ranging from the insipid to the inspired. Minions make a (mercifully brief) appearance, as do songs by Slayer, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Weezer. There’s a whole series of Maroon 5 mashups, a shockingly good hybrid using Dire Straits’ “Money For Nothing,” a too-short Beastie Boys “Intergalactic” cut-and-paste job, and even a few curveballs: Part I’s “Fitter Oppier” is an effective Radiohead nod, while Part II’s “Gangnam Style (downloaded from LimeWire)” is brilliantly subtle.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most entertaining songs on GAGNAMCORE 2 tend to use ’90s pop jams as a foundation—yes, “Everygangnam Everygangnum,” “Livin’ La Vida Gangnam,” “Cotton Psyed Joe,” “C’mon N Style It (The Chaos Train),” and “Smells Like Teen Style” are all exactly what you think they are. Best of all? Buy the collection from Bandcamp, and all proceeds go to charity, so giddy up and do some guilt-free digging into this treasure trove of “Gangnam Style” ephemera.
