Dumb And Dumber To hides Bill Murray in plain sight

Dumb And Dumber To is now out in theaters. Our own A.A. Dowd saw it and he didn’t like it a lot. That won’t stop dummies from going to see it on the big screen (“dummies” being the accepted plural vernacular for hardcore Dumb And Dumber fans), however, and if you are going to see the Farrelly Brothers’ sequel (preferably dressed in an orange tuxedo), you are about to be armed with information. Critical information. Information that will allow you to stand up in the middle of the film, point at the screen, bellow “THERE’S BILL MURRAY,” and endear yourself to fellow moviegoers.

While Jennifer Lawrence politely asked that her cameo be forever stricken from the annals of Dumb And Dumber To history (or at least until the Blu-ray bonus features come out), Bill Murray was happy to be seen in the sequel. And what role was perfectly suited for Murray’s classic laconic wit? Icepick, the hazmat-suited methamphetamine cook who splits rent with Harry (Jeff Daniels). Apparently, Murray is just as happy to be completely unrecognizable in Dumb And Dumber To as he is to be seen in it.

Director Peter Farrelly explained how they arranged the cameo, saying, “Since you never see Icepick, we were thinking, ‘Hey, we should get someone who’s iconic to do it.’ And who’s more iconic than Bill Murray?” It’s hard to argue with that logic. And seeing how Murray enjoys dropping in just for the hell of it, the Farrelly brothers arranged for Peter Venkman to crush up some Blue Sky on screen.

Bill Murray now joins the exclusive ranks of pop culture’s most beloved ice picks, including Rick’s confidant from Magnum P.I. and Sharon Stone’s ice pick from Basic Instinct.
