Dumb Numbers draws inspiration from David Lynch in this exclusive new single
For the latest project by Dumb Numbers (video maker and musician Adam Harding, with a rotating assemblage of musicians), the band has turned to David Lynch for musical inspiration, collaboration, and even the direction of their charity. The group is releasing a box set of three split 10-inch records, with a portion of all proceeds going to The David Lynch Foundation For Consciousness-Based Education And World Peace. Put out by Joyful Noise, the records feature new music from Dumb Numbers, along with tracks from ex-The Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow, the Melvins, and Lynch himself.
The leadoff single, “I Dreamed I Saw Jack Nance Last Night,” provides a perfect compliment to the split with Lynch, taking its inspiration from a variety of Twin Peaks references. Bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg (Warpaint) is clearly riffing on the bass line from the theme song, while Harding’s guitar solo was recorded the same way people speak in the Red Room: learned backwards, recorded, then reversed. It’s a song that evokes the uncanny feeling of both ethereal lightness and jittery darkness, all in one languorously paced track. The box set is available for pre-order at Joyful Noise’s webstore, and will be released on Halloween.
