Dune: Part Two forgot to submit for Golden Globes’ “Achievement in Making Money” award

As the Golden Globes rebuilds itself following half a century of controversy and discrimination, the organization also wants people to watch the show. Using the logic that led to the Academy Awards giving “Flash Enters the Speed Force” the “cheer-worthy moment” designation, the Globes now rewards those movies that won’t win any big prizes on artistic merit but made boffo B.O. Last year, the only way the Globes could reward Barbie and Poor Things was to create a new category honoring the achievement of making lots of money. Assuming it won’t need the Globes’ fakest sounding award, no one at Warner Bros. submitted Dune: Part Two for the “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” award.

Per Variety, continuing the sequel’s issues with the Golden Globes, Dune: Part Two wasn’t nominated because the distributor, Warner Bros. Picture, did not submit the film for the category. Despite reaching the category threshold of grossing more than $150 million with at least $100 million in the United States, it was not on the ballot. According to Portuguese film critic and Golden Globes voter Cláudio Alves, “Sadly, we could only vote for the films submitted by their distributors in that category. And only 16 films were actually submitted.” Instead, the Dick Clark Productions is left with the nominees Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Gladiator II, Inside Out 2, Twisters, Wicked, and The Wild Robot. Stupid original film, The Wild Robot, is preventing the Globes from giving out an “Outstanding Achievement in Franchising.” The Globes nearly matched the top-grossing films of 2024, which currently lacks a single original film. Thanks a lot, Wild Robot.
