Martin Scorsese’s big-screen version of Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island is one of the weirdest movies ever to make a boatload of money, and though it’s not one of Scorsese’s best, it’s as fevered and borderline-experimental as anything he’s ever done. The DVD and Blu-ray don’t add much, apart from a pair of very strong short featurettes: one about the psychological debate that fuels the story, and one about the visual clues sprinkled throughout the movie. Elsewhere, in the curio department of the DVD/BD Release List, this week offers a video record of the Eric Idle and John Du Prez-penned Monty Python oratorio Not The Messiah (He’s A Very Naughty Boy); and a decade’s worth of National Film Board projects find a home on Animation Express. Also, fans of endearing old TV series are well-served this week, thanks to a first-season set of the ‘90s kids mystery show Ghostwriter and full-series sets of Tales Of The Gold Monkey (review coming tomorrow) and The A-Team (packaged in a cardboard van!).
