This is the week for interestingly flawed movies that are worth at least a rental, top-lined by the high-concept Ricky Gervais comedy The Invention Of Lying (which bogs down whenever it tries to be a melancholy romantic comedy, but succeeds whenever Gervais is exploring the reality of a world without lies) and Gamer (a typically garish Neveldine/Taylor action movie with a savage satirical perspective on the future of gaming culture). Also worth a second look? Steven Soderbergh’s two-part, four-hour biopic Che, now available in a well-appointed Criterion edition. (More on Che and Soderbergh here.) And as a corollary to Che, take a gander at Chevolution, a fascinating documentary about how a single image of the communist revolutionary became internationally known.
