DVD Release List – 10/21/08

New music isn't the only media to be released on Tuesdays; it's unveiling day for new DVDs as well…

Everything's coming up Hulk this week, with the release of this past summer's semi-blockbuster and a box set of the complete '70s TV show. Or if you like your TV adventure series a little more classy, the complete Man From U.N.C.L.E. is now widely available, after spending a year as a Time-Life exclusive. (We reviewed the Time-Life set last year.) Or if you like your TV adventure series a lot less class, can we interest you in a little show called Knight Rider? On the highbrow front, the release of the week is the latest box set from Criterion's Eclipse label, this time collecting four films about geishas (both respectable and not) by Japanese master Kenji Mizoguchi. Also notable for fans of world cinema: Hou Hsio-Hsien's French cinema homage Flight Of The Red Balloon (an at times devastating meditation on transience as the only constant in life). Meanwhile, the pulp-minded can enjoy the latest Warner gangster set or a nicely packaged series of sci-fi/monster flicks from Legend. Lastly, the bounty of classic cinema getting the full Blu-Ray treatment (as opposed to being just slapped onto the format with minimal clean-up) now includes six classic James Bond films, complete with copious commentaries and featurettes.

Idea for crossover: James Bond versus The Hulk. How can we make this happen?
