DVD Release List – 11/18/08

This week offers multiple opportunities for DVD collectors to re-buy movies and TV shows they've bought before. Want to check out the cheekily packaged "13th Anniversary Edition" of Trey Parker's horror-musical Cannibal? Or the third season of the remastered, retooled Star Trek? Or a box set of those more-entertaining-than-you-might-think Victor Borge specials that are always being advertised on TV? Better yet: the umpteenth repackaging of Monty Python's Flying Circus (this one containing every episode on fourteen discs, plus two discs of live performances, two discs of retrospective documentaries, and three discs of "best-of" material… watch them all and you'll see the parrot sketch roughly a dozen times).

Better yet, how about catching up with some of the most-acclaimed films of 2008 in preparation for year-end best-of season? On the documentary side, Werner Herzog's Antarctic meditation Encounters At The End Of The World and Alex Gibney's Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson are now available, while fans of romantic French froth can pop in Priceless, starring Audrey Tatou as a gold-digger who shows a desperate hotel employee the ropes. And then there's a modest little cartoon called Wall-E–arguably the best movie of '08.

The release of the week though may well be Kino's long-awaited second boxset of films by D.W. Griffith, including Griffith's only two sound features and the acclaimed Kevin Brownlow/David Gill documentary Father Of Film. From Cannibal to Griffith… this week covers the waterfront.
