It’s a sparse week in DVD Release-ville, but there are three releases in particular worth noting. First and foremost is the complete series set of the short-lived Dana Carvey Show, a botched attempt to bring an SNL sensibility to ABC primetime in the mid-‘90s. Because it tanked, the DCS is remembered maybe a little more fondly than it deserves by those who like their TV to be “too good for TV,” but the show did feature some very funny sketches, and is worth checking out for the work of Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell (in the ensemble) and Charlie Kaufmann and Robert Smigel (in the writers’ room). Also noteworthy: the Criterion/Eclipse set Alexander Korda’s Private Lives, featuring four sophisticated, witty, lavishly art-directed historical dramas from the early ‘30s; and Taken, the hit thriller from earlier this year that overcomes its relentless brutality (and dim plot twists) with a snappy pace and a charismatic Liam Neesen performance.
