DVD Release List – 5/19/09

Ordinarily your steadfast steward of the DVD Release List would be using this space to direct you to some hidden gems on the weekly slate, and/or to remind you of the biggest titles of the week (and possibly make excuses for them). But this week we can’t stop salivating over some releases we’re especially stoked to see on the shelves: like the sure-to-be-awesome-looking Blu-ray releases of A Bug’s Life and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, or the bargain-priced set of Friday Night Lights’ excellent third season, or the Criterion box set of Shohei Imamura films, or the Criterion edition of the evocative ‘70s crime film The Friends Of Eddie Coyle (full review coming tomorrow), or the nice new DVD editions for Fritz Lang’s 1941 anti-Nazi thriller Man Hunt and John Ford’s overtly revisionist western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

But hey, if you’re looking for one of those hidden gems, consider Kobe Doin’ Work, Spike Lee’s docu-analysis of an ordinary regular season Lakers game (and his conscious homage to the similar soccer doc Zidane). And hey, you know what’s a pretty good movie, despite all the bad buzz that surrounded it? Valkyrie.
