A lot of good stuff this week. The first season of one of 2008’s best new TV series, Sons Of Anarchy, arrives on DVD in plenty of time for newcomers to get caught up in advance of Season Two. Arthouse fans have some tough choices to make, deciding where to skew old and pick up the new edition of John Cassavetes’ psychodrama Husbands (or the Criterion Blu-rays of Jacques Tati’s exquisite Playtime and Akira Kurosawa’s gorgeous Kagemusha); or skew new and go for the erratic but oft-thrilling Tilda Swinton vehicle Julia (or the fine boxing documentary Tyson). There’s even plenty for the nostalgists to cling to this week, be it the ‘80s teen sexploitation favorites Hardbodies and Spring Break, or a nice-looking set of Japanese monster movies from Toho, or the trippy and philosophical Disney short Donald In Mathmagic Land. But why wait on the latter? You can watch it on-line right now! (Can’t make the same promise for Hardbodies.)
