DVD Release List – 8/25/09
It’s another strong week in the DVD biz, highlighted by one of 2009’s most underrated big studio releases, the pointed corporate spy caper Duplicity. The indies and semi-indies are in fine form too, with the home video debuts of Rahmin Bahrani’s Goodbye Solo, the soldier-comes-home drama American Son, and the post-grad hang-out comedy/romance Adventureland. Criterion has one of its most formidable slates in months, featuring Whit Stillman’s Last Days Of Disco and Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielmann (reviews of both coming tomorrow), and a set of cracklingly good late ‘50s/early ‘60s Japanese crime films from the company’s Eclipse line. (Review of that coming next week.) And though you could’ve seen Patton Oswalt’s latest stand-up special for free this past weekend on cable, the DVD version is uncensored, and features a very cool cover that has cartoonist Ivan Brunetti mimicking old Jack Chick tracts. That’s worth the list price right there.
