Nothing especially splashy on this week’s list, outside of the solid, well-acted political thriller State Of Play, so why not dig a little deeper? The indie drama Sugar is a real winner, telling the story of a Dominican baseball player’s difficult relocation to middle America to play in the minor leagues. Also strong from the indie realm: the similar Take Out, about a Chinese illegal’s attempt to make enough money from one day on his delivery job to pay back the gang that brought him overseas. Or, reaching back a few decades, you could check out The Evil That Men Do, a tough 1984 actioner starring Charles Bronson as an assassin called out of retirement; or the 1983 animated sword-and-sorcery feature Fire And Ice, directed by Ralph Bakshi with the input of fantasy illustrator Frank Frazetta and comic book writers Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas.
